Watch out for that stalagmite! Caving is an activity enjoyed by explorers of all ages who find endless wonder in the dark underworld. Commercial caves are most popular and most accessible; they are often featured in national parks and provide stairs, electric lighting and handrails for visitors. But there are countless more 'wild caves,' where spelunkers must don hardhats (with headlamps) and descend into an unknown abyss. Caving refers specifically to the exploration of wild caves. The southeastern United States is famous for them, but wild caves can be found on almost every continent. With proper gear and preparedness, caving can be a fun adventure for the entire family.
