Boston is the largest city in New England, the capital of Massachusetts and one of the most historic cities in the United States. It was founded in 1630, and was the center of the American Revolutionary period. (Some of you may recall the details of the Boston Tea Party.)

It boasts dozens of museums, 62 historical sites, and several world-class universities and colleges, among them Harvard, MIT, Boston College and the University of Boston. It also gave the world Boston clam chowder. More than 16 million tourists visit each year, making it one of the ten most popular tourist locations in the country.

Although technically not part of Boston proper, the cities of Cambridge (just across the Charles River, home to Harvard and MIT), Newton, Brookline and Somerville are in many ways an integral part of the larger city and are an interesting addition to any visit to Boston.

Boston is a sports town, and its residents are fiercely loyal fans of its professional teams: the Red Sox (baseball), Celtics (basketball), Bruins (hockey), New England Patriots (football) and New England Revolution (soccer).
