Newport was founded in 1639 as a seaport town. During the 18th Century, Newport was a major maritime trading center and a key port in the famous Triangle Trade, which transported slaves, molasses, and rum. Newport is now a popular tourist destination thanks to its notable colonial architecture and the JVC Newport Jazz Festival held annually.
