Myrtle Beach is a major tourist destination on the South Atlantic coast of South Carolina. It is well-known for its wide beaches, large selection of challenging golf links, excellent seafood restaurants and outlet-style shopping activities. It attracts over 14 million visitors annually, consisting of tourists from other Southern states or "Snowbirds" from the North, who may own a condominium or timeshare along the coast. More than a little kitschy, Myrtle Beach has more putt-putt courses per square mile than any other place on earth.
Myrtle Beach (part of what is known as the "Grand Strand" of beach towns) is often crowded and a little rowdy, although it is full of attractions for kids and you should always be able to find a spot on its large beaches (although the early bird gets the worm, or best spots, in this case). Beware of the infamous "Senior Week" and two "Bike Weeks" in late May and early June, when graduated high school seniors and groups of motorcyclists bring the party (and traffic) to the Beach.
