The capital of Virginia, Richmond, lies in the center of the state. The James River cuts through the city, and is a recreational attraction for water sports enthusiasts. Richmond played a major political role in the early colonial era; Patrick Henry gave his famous “Give me liberty or give me death!” speech here, which ushered in the American Revolution. Modern-day Richmond boasts many cultural arts attractions, such as the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Edgar Allen Poe Museum.
