A beloved beach resort town since the late 1800s, Virginia Beach has everything a beach vacationer might want, from a vibrant city center with endless arts and entertainment to tranquil retreats full of quiet outdoor exploits. The resort beaches are most popular and stretch for miles along the city center, a wide swath of beautiful yellow sand facing the Atlantic Ocean. A park-like boardwalk runs parallel to the beach, an area full of oceanside restaurants, and a popular spot with cyclists, rollerbladers and strollers alike. The boardwalk’s four stages offer nightly live music during the summer.

The Chesapeake Bay beaches to the north offer small, quiet beaches for those wanting to get away from crowds. Here you’ll find First Landing State Park, which offers hiking and biking trails, and a wheelchair accessible dune-crossing trail; nearby Lynnhaven Inlet’s marinas let anglers can get their fishing fix. Sandbridge beaches to the south offer more peaceful retreats and activities like kayaking, hiking and fishing. Easy day trips from Sandbridge include False Cape State Park and the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge.
