Vatican City is a landlocked sovereign city-state whose territory consists of a walled enclave within the city of Rome. At approximately 110 acres, and with a population of around 900, it is the smallest state in the world by both population and area. It is the last Papal state in existence and the temporal seat of the Pope, head of the worldwide Catholic Church.
The two main entrances to Vatican City for tourists are the Vatican Museums, accessible from Viale Vaticano on the North side of the city state and St. Peter's Basilica, on the Southeast side of the city and accessible from Via della Conciliazione. One of the greatest art galleries in Europe, the Vatican Museum is most famous for its spiral staircase, the Raphael Rooms and the exquisitely decorated Sistine Chapel.
